"Always carry a notebook. And I mean always. The short-term memory only retains information for three minutes; unless it is committed to paper you can lose an idea for ever."

    -Will Self

The average student spends their time in the classroom writing on woodpulp between two pieces of cardboard.

Blue lined paper that hasn't changed for 50 years and a cheap binding that falls apart whenever you put the notebook in your backpack.

Jotters are made to be a book when they are finished. Instead of writing or taking notes on what is basically disposable paper, a Jotter is meant to last your entire career.

Why have notebooks that fall apart and pile up when you can have one that can be put on a shelf in a library and referenced again and again as the author continues to grow in knowledge and experience.

Insights don't usually arrive at my desk, but go into notebooks when I'm on the move. Or half-asleep.

   -Hilary Mantel

Jotters was created out of necessity. Being a dedicated student I had spent years piling up spiral notebooks and stapled paper. These piles now reside under my bed so that I have them when I need them to reference. I can't keep them on a bookshelf because that just looks wrong. But, with them under the bed they are terribly hard to reference.

I am still one of those people that love flipping though paper rather than through Google search results. But my notebooks are horrible to search through too.

I also found that notebooks generally are not formatted to help notetaking. They don't help you organize your notes. They feel cheap and they are just boring.

So I decided to fix every problem I ever had with notebooks in one fell swoop. I created Jotters.

I was able to experiment with line formats, that I enjoyed, by printing off stacks of my own layouts and using them in class. When I started sharing these pages with friends I quickly learned how to improve them for lefties.

When the pages were perfected I found where I could get the best layout bound in hardback so that it will never wear out. I also decided to make the cover white, leaving it open to any kind of Sharpie art.

And just to top off the note-"Book" I put a table of contents into it so that you no longer had to search for content by checking each page, or by filling it with sticky notes. You just update the Table of Contents after class each day and have a true reference book for that class.

You can find any number of notebooks on Ebay or Amazon today. But you will not find one which  meets every need as well as this one does. That is because they don't use their own merchandise. I created these so that I could use them.

But that wasn't enough. The notebook is rapidly being replaced by tablet computers. To make Jotters really worth it I had to make them compatible with the digital world. So I am creating JotLink.

Jotlink is an online resource and reference that you can access through this website in order to be connected to online learning resources which can help you in whatever class you are in. Jotlink is meant to be a dynamic digital resource that complements what you learn in class and put in your notebook.

Notebooks have been the same for thousands of years. But now, Jotters are not just another pile of lined paper. They are the best notebook ever created.

Jotters was just a fix to a slew of age old problems in the classroom. A college kid in his dormroom was just too frustrated to go on with what he had.

I have spent my entire college life fighting with broken systems and products. If I ever have a chance to fix them, I do.

Jotters was one of those chances. I was able to take the traditional notebook and revitalize it in a way that no one else has, and to such a high level.

I hope you enjoy your Jotter as much as I enjoyed making it, using it, and sharing it with you.
